As college students in this day and age, I think we all can agree that our wallets don’t go as deep as they used to; after all, the phrase “broke college student” didn’t appear in our lexicon for no reason.
Because we don’t have tons of money to throw away anytime something breaks, tears, or gets worn out, we want to make sure that the items we are buying are of good quality and will last us a long time; oftentimes, we search for this info through product reviews or ratings on the company’s website. However, reviews on blogs (or vlogs) are also a great way to get introduced to products that you had no clue you needed (or that even existed). That is why I am introducing a new favorites series to help introduce you to products and services that I love and have personally used, so that you can try them out too! Be sure to let me know what you all think (or have any suggestions for me!).
Health and Beauty
Early in June, I was given a popular type of lip balm (not Burt’s Bees) and decided to try it out. After only two applications, my lips began to crack and bleed; I immediately stopped using the lip balm, but by then it was too late. Over the course of several days, they became so worse that they were constantly numb.
I would like to say that it was just an allergic reaction, but after a bit of research, my mom found out that many other people were having the same reaction to it as me. I tried using my previous chapstick to fix it. No results. I took my mom’s advice to put Vaseline on it. Temporary relief, but it didn’t repair the damage. My sister Emma suggested using nothing for a few days. It got worse.
As a last desperate attempt, I grabbed some Burt’s Bees Lip Balm on my way to work one day, and it quickly became one of the best purchases I’ve made. It instantly began to heal and repair the damage that the former lip balm had caused, and Burt’s Bees thereafter became my favorite brand of lip balm.
Fashion and Accessories
After finding out about these sandals around 2 years ago, I just knew I had to own a pair. After wishing for them for a long time, I finally got a pair at the beginning of June, and my only regret is not owning a pair sooner!
My first big chance to try them out was when I went camping mid-June. These were perfect for the trip because they are easier to take on and off than sneakers and provide a much thicker sole than flip-flops; this thick sole was absolutely necessary at the campground I was staying at, which had many roads made up of rough gravel that would hurt my feet whenever I walked around in my thin flip-flops. Whenever I walked in my Chacos, however, I couldn’t feel the rough and uneven gravel at all, and it was such a nice change!
A few months ago, I saw a girl on my campus with a Kavu rope bag that immediately caught my eye, and I just knew that I had to have one. After several months of waiting, I finally got one!
Kavu rope bags are great for so many purposes, whether it’s for your vacation or just an everyday bag. They have several different pockets and sections in it (both zippers and velcro) that are great to separate things with based on your preferences, and the design of the backpack makes it easy to just swing around to grab something out of it, rather than having to fully take it off of your back.
The best part about Kavu bags is that there are so many designs and styles to choose from, that it’s almost impossible to not find one that you like. I loved taking mine camping and I can’t wait to buy more in the future.
Books and Things
Ever wonder about the numerous advancements in computer animation over the years, or how the world-renowned Pixar Animation Studios came to be? This book by Ed Catmull, one of the forebears of computer graphics and the president of Pixar Animation Studios, and Amy Wallace is the book that I started in June and am currently reading, and I couldn’t be happier with it. Creativity, Inc. takes you through the multitudinous advancements of computer graphics, the creation and evolution of Pixar, the development of a creative culture, and so much more. It is an absolute must-read for a person in any industry because it not only tells a story (after all, that’s what Pixar is best known for), but it also makes you think about the world around you. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a love of reading, learning, and creativity.
2. Turbie Twist
We all know the struggle of how hard it is to take care of long hair. There are multiple hair products that you probably use (all in large amounts), it takes forever to brush and style in the morning, and it seems to be an eternity until it actually begins to dry after taking a shower. Can’t a girl just get a break?
For me, this break came in the form of the Turbie Twist, which is a lightweight towel that you can use to wrap your hair with after a shower, rather than the old way of wrapping your hair with a ginormous, regular towel and balancing it on your head until it begins to dry. The best part for me is not only how light and small it is (compared to a regular-sized towel), but that the twisted part of the towel is held in place with an elastic band, so you don’t have to worry about it falling off. This is an absolute must-have for any girl, and is perhaps one of the best gifts that I’ve ever received.
This is my first ever monthly favorites post and I am so excited to share it with you all. If you have any suggestions for me for how I do these posts (positive or negative), I will gladly welcome feedback! And please let me know if you’ve tried (or plan on trying) any of these products yourself!
P.S. Have any questions, comments, or feedback for me? Feel free to write me a letter back (in the comments) or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I can’t wait to hear from you!
